2. REQUIRED TEXTBOOK:

COLOR WORKBOOK by Becky Koenig (available in De Anza Bookstore)

3. COURSE DESCRIPTION

This is a beginning color design class that will combine lectures with studio projects. The class will emphasize color theory as it applies to fine arts, graphic design, and contemporary media such as websites. Students will create projects that will help them to better understand the subjective nature of color. Projects will explore the inherent properties of color: hue, value, saturation, color contrasts, complementary colors, warm/cool properties, spatial color, transparency, visual texture, rhythm, harmony, and other color attributes that are influenced by cultural, psychological and personal expression.

4. COURSE OBJECTIVES

The student will:

  1. Understand color properties and vocabulary, and be able to discuss color theory in an articulate manner.

  2. Learn good design practices: how to use color to produce a strong visual statement.

  3. Be able to creatively solve visual problems through process and investigation.

  4. Develop a technical proficiency in mixing colors, and in creating dynamic designs using color contrasts and harmonies.

  5. Understand the difference between additive & subtractive color, including the distinction between primary colors: RGB (light), CMYK (printed media), and RYB (pigments).

  6. Develop excellent, professional presentation skills.

  7. Be able to analyze and critique art projects, to be able to clearly speak about their own work and the work of other students.

  8. Develop a heightened sensitivity to color that will allow the student to use color effectively in future projects.

5. ATTENDANCE POLICY

Class begins promptly and students are required to attend all class meetings on time. All of the important information about upcoming projects, as well as demonstrations and reviews of homework are given at the beginning of class. You are entirely responsible for checking in with a classmate to review any information that you miss due to tardiness. On the first day of class, get phone numbers and email addresses of two other students, so that you can support each other for missed classes, and information about homework assignments.

3 lates = 1 absence

Leaving midway through class = 1 absence

3 absences = lowers your final grade by one letter grade

Each additional absence after 3 absences = lowers your final grade by one letter grade

1 absence of a Critique = lowers your final grade by one letter grade

5 absences = automatic failure of course

Absence at the Final Critique = automatic failure of course

Instructor may drop students AT ANY TIME DURING THE QUARTER who have missed two or more consecutive classes and have not contacted the instructor with an explanation. It is your responsibility to stay in communication with the instructor.

More than three absences can result in failure of the class. Absences DO NOT excuse you from any assignment deadlines. Students are responsible for all material covered in class even on days of absence. If you are absent, it is your responsibility to find out what you missed and if there have been any revisions to the class schedule or assignment deadlines.

NO EXCEPTIONS! MISSING FIVE CLASSES CONSTITUTES AN AUTOMATIC FAIL.

6. GRADING POLICY

GRADING

50%            PROJECTS

30%            HOMEWORK, CLASSWORK, QUIZZES

20%            PARTICIPATION, EFFORT & ATTENDANCE

The projects will be graded on the following criteria:

  • Fulfilling the goals of assignment

  • Demonstrating an understanding of the concepts and design principles of each project

  • Demonstration of solid craftsmanship & technique on all areas of the project

  • Showing attention to detail, promptness and presentation

  • Exhibiting creativity & skill beyond what is required to simply complete the project

Students may redo assignments, and turn them in again, if they are not satisfied with their grade. Students may turn in late work, but will drop one letter grade per class late. Not turning in an assignment will result in an 'F' for that project.

*POP QUIZZES and CLASS EXERCISES are often unannounced and cannot be made up if missed.

Grades:

A

Exceptional work. All projects turned in by the due date. Excellent attendance.

B

Good work. All projects turned in by the due date. No more than 2 absences.

C

Passing effort. Some projects were turned in late. 3 absences, or chronic lateness.

D

Inadequate effort. Projects turned in late. 4 absences, or chronic lateness.

F

Failed. Missed major assignments. Did not do homework. 5 absences.

7.  EFFORT

The effort that you put into the class determines your success and your grade. You are responsible for arriving to class on time, prepared to work. Make sure that you have all of your supplies with you each day of class. Keep the class calendar handy, and check it to make sure that you have all of your work completed by the due date. Effort is a significant part of your grade. Learning professionalism and self-motivation is a valuable lesson that you will learn from taking art classes.
