STEP BY STEP – Set up your website

There are 3 steps to setting up your website:

1. DOMAIN REGISTRATION – purchase your website’s name.

2. Find a company to HOST your website on their server.

3. DESIGN and upload your site.

1. Domain Registration

The good thing about registering your domain name through ReadyHosting…you do not have to pay an annual domain name fee.

3. Design

There are a number of ways to design a website. If you are able to work with your own site, then you can make updates frequently. Taking a class now to learn how to design and update your website is a good investment that will save you money in the future.

FrontPage is a simple, inexpensive program that is similar to MS Word (PC only).

Dreamweaver is another good program for both Macs & PC.

You can also use a portfolio site to get your work online. They have templates, so the prices are usually less expensive than having a custom site built for your work:

A standard layout for your website:

  • Your home page should have a great visual image to catch people’s attention.

  • Make sure that your home page loads quickly!

  • The information on your website should not be more that 3 CLICKS away from your home page.

  • Each page should have a link back to your home page.

  • Most people will spend less than 30 seconds looking, so the information should be presented in a dynamic & efficient way.
